iGCSE Chemistry - Simple Covalent Bonds

Hello All!
So,  had Chemistry yesterday, and trying to now make sense of Simple Covalent Compounds.

There are 3 ways to represent Simple Covalent Compounds, and I’m going to show them to you using the example of Ammonia, NH3

1.       The Dot-And-Cross Diagram Way:

2.       The Lines Diagram Way:

3.       The Outer Energy Level Way:

Ammonia is made up of 3 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Nitrogen atom, joined in Covalent Bonds.
Hydrogen has 1 electron in its highest energy level, so it needs 1 more to complete its outer shell.
Nitrogen has 5 electrons in its highest energy level, so it needs 3 more to complete its outer shell.
So, Nitrogen shares the only 3 electrons from the 3 Hydrogen atoms, and the Hydrogen atoms share 3 of the 5 Nitrogen outer shell electrons.
So, do you get it?
I do!....

I think...hmm...

Book Review - Debutantes by Cora Harrison

Hello!

Today I am reviewing the book which I pre-reviewed last week. It is...

This book began with an uninspiring opening for the first few chapters, so much so that I nearly gave up!

I am very glad I didn't!

As I said in my pre-review, Cora Harrison's plot is one which I immediatly felt attracted to, and so I thought a book with a back cover so inspiring and a subject matter so interesting to me had to be a good read, so I continued.

Let me tell you now, you will think you know what is going to happen, and will think you know the end.

You don't.

The book is about four 1920s sisters, who all have different views of life, the world, and everything, and are all trying to make their way, find love, find life and find out who they are. It sounds sentimental and girls, and I'm not going to lie, It is. However, it is also a wonderful exploration of girls growing into women and finding their places in the 'great scheme of things'.

It is a hard book to review because there isn't much you can say without ruining the end! Just try it, ok?

I guess I am biased~I love the 20s. But seriously? Who doesn't enjoy the jazz that the 20s brought?

Anyway, I hope I made you want to pick up a copy and give it a try! Have a peek at my pre-review too ☺

This Week...

Hello!

Hope you're all well and enjoying the last Saturday of November!

Here's my third weekly round-up of Books, TV and Movies.

Books

Read:

Debutantes by Cora Harrison (8/10, review coming soon; in the meantime click the link for a pre-review )

I was Jane Austen's Best Friend, also by Cora Harrison. I've read about half, and so far I'd give it 8/10

The Angel Experiment by James Patterson. I've also read about half of this one, but I'd only give it a 6/10 so far so I don't know if I'll finish it...It just isn't as good as his 'Witch and Wizard'.

BTW: Remind me to get the next Witch and Wizard book from the Library next week!

The Truth about Celia Frost by Paula Rawsthorne (8.5/10 ☺)

To Read:

Hitler's Angel by William Osborne

Quote from way-back-when:

"I'm going to re-read Pride and Prejudice so I can read the sequel, written by Joan Aiken, called Lady Catherine's Necklace."

It didn't happen.

It WILL this week.

Maybe...

I hit the library last week on a really good day, so I got a load of good-looking books. Hopefully I'll read them sometime this week or next. Here are a few of them:

Vice and Virtue by Veronica Bennett
Dead Time by Anne Cassidy
I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley

TV

Essential Viewing from the Past Week:

Merlin ~ Episode 7 - A lesson in Vengance

My first impressions of this are:  Don't Make Gwen Evil!! It doesn't suit her, and I really like the romantic Arthur & Gwen things...they're not there anymore!

Strictly Come Dancing ~ Denise and James again! They were fantastic in that Charleston! Just the right dance to accompany Debutante!

This week:

Just the usual:

~ Merlin

~ Island Hospital

~ Strictly Come Dancing

No Movies again right now...Oh hold on...If you like Bond (and who doesn't):

SKYFALL!!!
Have a great week, and I'll see you when I see you!

Enjoy the last week of November, and don't forget to dust down that Christmas Spirit ready for next month!

Scarlet and Crimson Complete Colour Collection Make-up Kit

Hello all!

Just had to post; my mum (love you mum xx) just bought me this gorgeous make-up kit, and I just tried on a couple of the colours, and they are so nice, such nice quality, and I wanted to let you all know!

From the outside it looks very colourful and cartoony, not sophisticated or fancy at all, and that may put some people off. I honestly can't say sophistication and my name in the same sentence without laughing, so that doesn't bother me. On the inside however...wow!

The 25 eyeshadows are every colour, from bright and striking teals and blues, to more light, natural creams and browns. There are also 15 lipglosses, which create a lovely shine for your lips, and 6 blushes, in varying shades, so there really seems to be something for everyone!

It is available from Boots, and is £18.00

So, maybe you'd like to put it on your Christmas List this holiday?

Book Pre-review; First Thoughts - Debutantes by Cora Harrison

Hello all!

Here I am, having done all my homework, with nothing to do on a Thurday morning, and an interesting book to pre-review!

This is a new invention of mine - the pre-review ☺ Drum roll please!

So, my first impressions of this book.

It has a storyline that I naturally thought I would be attratcted to and interested in, given that it is set in the 1920s and is in the break in quite a turbulant time - post WW1 and pre-Great Depression. It is set in a time that appeals to me, however the 'season' in London, the floaty dresses and the 'girls should be seen and not heard' opinion is not what appeals. It is the beginnings of marrying for love, and starting to break away from the traditionally accepted social standings. A chance (although it took a long time to really take off) for women to become what they wanted to, be it a doctor, nurse, writer, film director, musician or simply to have the same opportunities as the men of the time.

I believe that although Women's Rights was discussed and campaigned for before the 20s, it really took off in this era, and became the standing point for women like the Pankhursts to really take the movement to the next level.

It starts quite tamely, and with quite a dull opening, I originally wondered if my first impressions of a book about the 20s had been wrong, and that they are not always a real image of life in this turbulent time.

I am glad to say, I was wrong.

As the book has continued, I have become wrapped in the lives of Daisy, Poppy, Rose and Violet, the sisters about whom this book is focused. I want to know who the mysterious woman, Elaine Carruthers, is, whose clothes were found perfectly preserved in a trunk in the loft, and how the girls' discovery of her existence will change their lives.

The book has drawn me in, even though I'm only on page 100, and I was surprised to see so many negative reviews on goodreads.com!

I'll be doing my full review later this week, but I thought a few of you may want to grab a copy of your own and read along with me. If you can, let me know what you think of this book as well ☺.

So far, I would give this book a 7/10

So, Byee!

Just a Quick Programming Quote...

Hello!

Quote by a guy called Rich Cook, who's a programmer and author.

“Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.”
- Rich Cook

So unbelievably true!!

Love this quote, it is just about to become my desktop wallpaper!

Top 10 THINGS in the World ☺

Hello!

For some unknown reason I am in an AMAZING mood! Just thought I'd share my JOYS with the world today!

So my TOP 10 of THINGS in the WORLD (Apologies for caps, I do use them way too much when I'm in a great mood!)

No. 10

PARTIES - My social life may well be lacking...hmmm....but I do love a good part-ay! Nibbles, music, conversation....What's not to like?

No. 9

MOVIES - Well, even though I don't really like cinemas (I don't enjoy the whole 'blinkered vision' thing...freaks me out!) I love relaxing on the sofa with a good action/adventure or sci-fi movie...no chick flicks on my TV!

No. 8

COOKING - I can rustle up a good carbonara or stroganoff like the Great British Bake-Off stars...maybe. Well, whether it tastes good or not, I enjoy the prep, and seeing people enjoy my ahem... creations...☺

No. 7

MUSIC - In most of it's forms! Sorry, but although I may be deserting most of my fellow teenage girls in this, I can't stand Justin Bieber!

No. 6

BLOGGING - Hey guys! Need I say more? I can talk about whatever I want here, and someone will always read it! I love the freedom!

No. 5

WRITING - Creating my own people, places and problems is one of my most favourite pastimes, and I find it just amazing how free you can be with your words and just make it up as you go along...it's amazing.

No. 4

MY BEDROOM - Privacy, peace and the joys of my GORGEOUS sofa bed! My two (enormous) bookshelves and my lovely radio! It is honestly the nicest bedroom ever! (Kinda need a desk though...)

No. 3

MY COMPUTER - Necessary for blogging, and just the nicest machine ever! Gives me no trouble (!) Ah, Yeah, I quite enjoy fixing it though! Coding is fun too, but I never run my codes, so I've probably been doing it wrong all these years!

No. 2

MY FAMILY - They're great! My grandparents are great, my uncles and aunts, and all my other relations are so supportive, and my parents? You guys rule x

No. 1

Last but not least...

MY FRIENDS - Guys, I love you! Seriously, my days at school would be not half as fun without you!

So, there is my list of my 10 top things I couldn't live without! Well, I could probably live without parties...but yeah, top 9 things I couldn't live without, and one I might be able to possibly struggle on without...Hmmm...

Need to re-name this post...

Anyways! See ya!

Two Christmas/Holiday Shopping Planners

Hello all!

Not posting a Weekly round up this week - been v. busy with a school show, so I haven't had much free time this week ☺.

I've also been busy over the past few days beginning to make my new 2013 planner pages, which I'll hopefully share in the coming weeks!

To start with, I'd like to give you two of my newest pages, my Christmas Gift planner and my Holiday Gift planner. They are fundamentally the same, but I wanted to make one for those who, like me, celebrate Christmas, and those who celebrate other festivals.

Both pages include space for 14 names and gift ideas, have a cheerful quote and cute little image to brighten your planner!

And best of all.....

They're both FREE!

Enjoy, and have a great week!

Book Review - Pocketful of Eyes by Lili Wilkinson

Good Evening!

Hello to all my visitors from the USA, UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands! Great to have you onboard!

Today I will be reviewing

Although I usually read books in a couple of sittings, just because it is something to do, I began this book at about 9.30 last night, and it began pretty ordinary, and if anything, duller than I expected. When I say it picked up after about a chapter or so, I mean it really did! I was totally hooked, and by about 11.00, having read just over 3/4 of the way through, although I desperately wanted to know the end...I knew that staying up any longer would seal my fate for today as: Completely unable to do anything other than moan about how little sleep I got...

Not a good look...

So after a lot of mental disagreement with myself, I went to bed, leaving the last 1/4 of the book unread.

I finished the last 1/4 this morning, and it was brilliant! Alhough the conclusion can be guessed part way through (and I did guess it, probably because I am a complete mystery geek) it still makes for a great, suspense filled story, because the conculsion I came to made no sense, but it remained to me the only possible one, and I wanted to know how the author made it happen!

I would give this book a 9/10 on the scale of Book Related Brilliance, simply because the main character Bee sometimes annoyed me with her complete lack of romantic know-how, and social ineptitude...then again, she somewhat reminds me of me sometimes...don't know what that says about me...

Anyway!

See you all soon

Hello All!

Hello!

Hope everyone had a fantastic firework night, or a great time doing whatever they were doing last weekend.

Apologies for not posting in the last week! I literally have had no chance to read much this week, but I'll read heaps today, and post heaps today too...I hope...

Sometime this afternoon (about 6.00) I'll post my latest review, and I'll do my weekly round up, which will probably be pretty short considering my lack of all interest in Media this week!

It's been a pretty good week all told, although super tiring. Covering Civil Rights Movement in American in the 60s and 50s in History, New Media in German, The Heart, and Heart Transplants in Biology, and we're studying Rag Desh in Music.

So anyway...see you later!

Book Review - Sister, Missing by Sophie McKenzie

Hello!

I know...my second post of the day? Am I overdoing it?

Anyway. I've literally this minute finished reading Sister, Missing by Sophie McKenzie. And I only got it this mornng. I am way too eager.

Sister, Missing is the second book in Sophie McKenzie's series about adopted girl Lauren and her search for her biological parents.

This book begins two years after the events of Girl, Missing.

Sam, Lauren's birth father had died 9 months previously, and Lauren's birth mother has a new boyfriend. Lauren, her birth sisters Madison and Shelby and her birth mother are on holiday when Madison is kidnapped in similar circumstances to those in which Lauren had been kidnapped more than 14 years previously.

The book charts the events leading up to Madison's rescue, and includes some shocking revelations, and another tragedy. (I will say no more about that...☺)

I found this book every bit as good as Girl, Missing, in fact it may even be better. I could not put this book down, even though I am now REALLY thrsty...

With snappy dialogue, a racing plotline and fantastic characterisation, this is really a must-read!

However...

(here comes the critique ☺)

I did find Lauren very moody, and although, yes, I can totally understand that Shelby's attiude would annoy anyone, I thought the patronising, the catty remarks, the spite could all have stopped pretty early in the book. I mean hello? Your sister has been kidnapped!! Enough with the sibling rivalry!

Also I thought (me being the romantic) there could have been more 'Jem and Lauren' moments in the book, but I guess it was meant as more an action/adventure book than a romance. Just my preference ☺.

I would give this book 8/10, and I really recommend you read it!

Bye (I really think it is Byee this time, although I'm off to start Hitler's Angel, so who knows what will happen when I finish it... ☺)

Dayzee x

This Week...

Hello!

So, here's a round up of this week's TV, Movies and Books.

Books

Read:

Emerald by Karen Wallace (5/10)
Witch and Wizard by James Patterson (see review)
The Swish of the Curtain by Pamela Brown (9/10, will review soon ☺)
Arabesque by Colin Mulhern (6/10)

I started a book called Troubador by Mary Hoffman, and although I've read and loved some of her books before, I just found it really dull, so I gave up...maybe I should have stuck with it, but for the first 4 or 5 chapters, I was just pretty bored...(4/10)

To Read:

I'm going to re-read Pride and Prejudice so I can read the sequel, written by Joan Aiken, called Lady Catherine's Necklace. I loved the Wolves Chronicles (home of 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase'), and a quote from The Times on the back cover of Lady Catherine's Necklace is 'Romantics could do nothing better than to read her' so I should enjoy it!

Also on my Library Ticket this week are:

Hitler's Angel by William Osborne
A Pocketful of Eyes by Lili Wilkinson
Sister, Missing by Sophie McKenzie
The Angel Experiment by James Patterson

and finally

The Truth about Celia Frost by Paula Rawsthorne

I've read 'Celia Frost' before, but I'm re-reading. It was so good last time, so I'll try to review it...if I get around to it!

TV

Essential Viewing for the Past Week (Watch it on Iplayer if you missed it!):

Sunday 28th October

Downton Abbey ~ 2nd to last episode - not to be missed!

Friday 2nd November

Island Hospital ~ Just because I follow it...and love the idea of living on an Island!

What I'll be watching this weekend:

Tonight:

Strictly Come Dancing ~ I know it's not the X-Factor but something about dancing around in pretty sequined dresses and heels appeals to me...hmm...

Merlin ~ Episode 5 of Series 5  - How do you think it is going so far? Arthur and Gwen...ahhh...It must be love, love, love...

Sunday:

The Final Episode of Downton! How will I live without it??????

Movies

Well, the only ones I've seen this week on TV are Inkheart, the 2008 movie and The Railway Children (The version with Bernard Cribbins, which IMHO is the only real version...just my view ☺...he was in Dr Who!!!)

I would probably recommend seeing The Railway Children if you want a feel-good drama, with all the technology and charm of the 1970s ☺

Or if you are looking for an action-packed edge-of-your-seat affair, choose Inkheart. It does feel slightly cliched though...

That's about it for now, so I'll see you when I see you!

Have a great weekend - who's watching fireworks this weekend?

ME!!

Keep warm and safe (I know I sound like a public safety video...but hey...☺)

Bye!
